Kerbela Knews -
April 2008
Potentate’s Message
Nobles and Ladies,
Here it is April and it seems that the year has just begun.
The Valentine’s Dance (I was told by a Noble) the best party Kerbela
has had in over 10 years. I don’t know about that! But a very good
time was had by all.
The cruise was great and now we turn out attention to our
Potentate’s Ball. From what I am being told the Temple will be hard
to recognize. The theme for the Ball is “Midnight at the Oasis.” The
band that played for the Valentine’s dance (The Legends) will be
back for the Ball. Friday night at the Holiday Inn will be a
pre-party, party. Seating is limited and the response for tickets is
going fast. I hope to see each of you there.
This will be followed by May, Fun Fest, Paper Sale Week and a whole
lot more! I would like to take this time to thank the staff for all
they have done this year. I know it’s hard work but I think we are
also having fun.
A big thank you to Chief Aide Danny Moore and Lady Vickie and to
Brenda Trotter and all the Go-Karters for all I have heard they are
doing. I would also like to thank our Assistant Rabban’s Lady Rita
for all her help with the invitations and the proper protocol for
the Ball.
Last but not least I would like to thank the Recorder Ill. Sir Wayne
and the office staff for all their help. I cannot tell you how many
calls I have had from our Nobles and also some from Imperial
Officers saying how great it is to see the Divan, staff and Nobles
pulling together for the good of the Temple and all Shrinedom. As I
have said before it is great to work together and see Kerbela shine.

Go Karts
Get the Go-Karts out and ready to go. Practice will be held Sunday
afternoon March 16th, 2:00. Meet at the old meeting place in
Clinton. We will be gearing up for our first parade of the new year.
Remember to call by the 14th if you would like to attend CPR classes
the 15th of this month. Time will be from 8 - 12. This is something
we all should know. Sometimes you never know just when something
like this will come in handy. Save a life.
Another date to keep in mind is April 4th, the handicap dance. Chuck
will be there around noon to get things rolling and will need all
the help we can muster up. These folks look forward to this every
year and have a ball. Come join in the fun. Hope to see you all
there.
As usual, we had a lot of good food at the meeting, got to sing
Happy Birthday to Lady Becky and share in the birthday cake.
Also like to wish April's birthday which is Lady Mary Livesay a very
Happy Birthday.
Don't forget to check your calendar for more important dates of
future events.
In closing please remember those is uniform and pray for their well
being that they may return safely home to their loved one.
Until next time. Be safe, and may God Bless you all.
Your Captain
Dan

Nobles and Ladies,
We missed last month’s Kerbela Knews.
We are looking for a big and happy year in 2008.
I would like to thank all Nobles and ladies for making Roane County
Shrine Club one of the best.
Louis Scherf is our Paper Sale Chairman again this year. He does a
good with the help from all our Noble’s good work.
Come visit with us when you can. We always have good food thanks to
the ladies every third Thursday at 6 pm at Southgate Lodge in

Kerbela Motor Corps
Greetings Nobles!
The temperatures are starting to rise again, so it’s time to start
thinking about riding. I hope everyone enjoyed the “Motorcycle
Safety Awareness Course” on March 20th. Donnie Andersen, our
president, worked hard on this and should be congratulated on a job
well done.
In April, we will begin our organized rides. Let us have your input
on destinations so that everyone may have a good time. We want to
hear from you. You do not have to be a unit member to go on these
rides.
The February dinner meeting was a huge success. I don’t think that
we could have squeezed another chair in at Wasabi’s. The food was
great, and the company was outstanding. We need to get back there
again.
The March dinner is at Lakeside Tavern at the old Concord Park on
the 29th at 6:00 pm. We hope everyone can attend. Remember, the more
the merrier. (The Tavern has a good selection of different foods and
a great view.)
Uniforms are being produced at this time, so everyone should have
their soon.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Donnie
Anderson at 806-2097 or palsterjr@aol.com
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, and safe riding!

Kerbela Klown Korp
Noble Klowns and Klownettes:
With regret and sadness to all of our hearts, Brother Fred (Freddie)
Rauch passed away on Monday, February 25, 2008 at his home in Bean
Station, TN. Bro. Fred was a dedicated husband and a loving father.
Fred was loved by everyone that he came in contact with, especially
all the children when he was driving the Shriners Hospital van
transporting the kids. When Fred was in his clowning outfit with
makeup on all the young and old children loved to see him make the
balloon animals and make those dogs out of beads. Fred will be sadly
missed by all.
If anyone wants to send his family a card or call his wife, Jane
here is the address and number. Mrs. Jane Rauch Phone: (865)
748-3682, 175 Chipmunk Circle , Bean Station, TN 37708.
Fred was our Kaptain of Kerbela Klown Korp. in 1992 and 1996. Fred
was the MC for our Fun Fest and South Atlantic Shrine Clown
Association for several years. There was several clowns and
S.A.S.C.A. officers at Brother Fred's Masonic Funeral.
We have now completed all the work for Fun Fest 2008. The Klown
banquet has been arranged, and all the food, competition,
registration, judges, M C and point counter have been picked. The
cost of the Klown Banquet tickets will be the same as it has been
for the past four years. Come on Fun Fest. We are ready.
Before I close, let's not forget to pray for all of our sick Nobles,
clowns, our country, our military men and women, especially their
families and all of the children that we transport to the Shriners
Hospitals.
If you can get a chance, stop by Kerbela's Office and tell the
ladies Juanita and Wanda what a wonderful job they are doing and
give them a big thank you!

Great Smoky Mt. Shrine Club
We are getting the current roster. All NPDs have been
dropped, as of March 1st, as per by-laws. No more Post Cards.
Did anyone read the National Geographic info, pertaining to saving
95% of energy by re-cycling the aluminum cans? No one challenged the
figures. Still collecting cans at clubs, Church and tractor
meetings. Should have over $800.00 before Paper Sale is over.
Remember, April 10th meeting our Poster Child, Matthew, will be
visiting. Y'all come out to meet and greet him.
Noble President, Don Floyd is getting his workers lined up for the
many locations we will work for Paper Sale. Be at the meetings and
volunteer like a good Tennessee resident. Please help with the Paper
Sale projects.
I reckon that nobody read the request for info on where to get a
wishing well. We have a great Paper Sale opportunity at the 407 Flea
Market.
Noble Lloyd Heath is still getting well at home. We ask your prayers
for all our sick and shut-in brothers, and the many that we don't
hear about.

Kerbela Patrol
Greetings Nobles and Ladies,
Well, another month has come and gone. Hope everyone had a happy St.
Patrick’s Day and a happy Easter.
Parade season is getting ready to start, so get your jeeps out and
running in good shape because our first parade is April 11th which
is the Dogwood Arts Parade.
The Patrol is looking forward and making plans to attend Fun Fest
this year. Maybe we can get all our jeeps into more parades this
year.
The Patrol Unit is donating money for the Shrine Hospital. All funds
collected will go to buy needed items. If anyone would like to give
$5, please see one of our members of the Patrol.
The Patrol is always looking for new members. I f anyone is
interested in joining, please see a Patrol member.
We want to wish a happy birthday to Vickie Dyer - April 21st. We
want to wish a happy anniversary to: Bill and Cindy Birchfield -
April 5th, and to Thomas and Carrie Bethea - April 19th.
There’s a whole lot of the flu going around, and we wish everyone
well including those over there fighting for us.
To cut down on your chances of getting the flu, remember to wash
your hands often or use hand sanitizer.
God bless,
Thomas Bethea

Kerbela Classy Carts
March is upon us, and we are nearing springtime. The Temple is
planning many new endeavors, and we need to look to our calendars
for these events.
A hearty welcome to the newest member of our unit, Jake Christian
Hicks, born December 21, 2007 to Greg and Hollie Hicks.
While I am at it, several birthdays are in order: Walt Zimbeck was a
little older in January; Kylie Zimbeck and Jessica Hicks enjoyed a
March birthday; and Dmitri Zimbeck had a birthday in February.
Congratulations to Don and Lisa Nicholson for putting together a
great cruise for Ill. Sir Vince and Debbie. Too bad the airlines
were not as reliable as Don and Lisa!
A tip of the Cart Fez to the Staff for a great Valentine’s Day
dance. If you missed this one, you missed a wonderful band and
fantastic ice cream treats.
Well, time to go and polish up our parade vehicles for another
parade. See you there.
Finally, please pray for our troops who allow us to meet without
fear of anarchy. God bless America!

ROCO Clowns
Just clowning around
Several ROCO clowns have started the year off running by clowning
for schools and nursing homes. Looks like it will be a repeat of the
busy year we had in 2007. Never a dull moment around these guys and
gals.
We would like to welcome our newest and almost newest members:
Richard & Linda Johnson, Joel & Mary Ann Crowe, and our old buddy
John Pack and “family”. John “Music Man” had been parading with us
last year and is the proud owner of a new “Trike” scooter. Richard
and Joel with the help of Brad “Pip” Patten are working to restoring
an antique three wheeler and obtaining at least one new scooter for
the upcoming parade season. The excitement gives me goose bumps to
watch these guys scurrying about trying to find parts for this piece
of 1950’s antiquity; we will keep everyone updated with their
progress. We hope to be ready for the parades beginning with
Fun-Fest.
We had been requested to participate in some Non-Shrine parades
earlier this year, and we had to decline as there wasn’t time to get
the approval process completed. I need to remind all the ROCO clowns
that parade in motorized vehicles: we must have written approval
from the Potentate before we can participate as Shriners in a
Non-Shrine parade. Remember; we are the public relations arm of the
Temple when we perform at any function. Let us be on our best
behavior. We will be discussing this and many other topics of Shrine
clowning at our upcoming training session in April.
Any newly created Nobles and any Shriner who has the urge to go
clowning, come join the ROCO clown unit and participate in the most
fun you can imagine. Brighten the life of many children and get a
personal thrill that is unmatched anywhere in this great
philanthropy. Pay us a visit on Unit Night (first Tuesday of each
month @ 7 PM) immediately following the general units meeting at
Kerbela Temple.
Always remember to pray for and support our military men and women.
Keep them close and thank anyone in uniform as well as all veterans.

Vintage Wheels
The yellow daffodils are blooming, and I saw a robin Sunday - can
spring finally be here? We hope everyone is getting over the flu,
and our Captain and hero Bruce got a got a really good report from
the lung doctor. We love you Bruce.
If you missed the Valentine’s dance, be sure to check the photo
board at the Temple. Ill. Sir Vince, Lady Debbie and the 2008 Staff
know how to give a party. The table decorations were very pretty,
the band really brought back a lot of good memories, and is there
anyone that doesn’t like ice cream.
Prudentia Lodge #719 in Alcoa is having a fish fry on March 29th
from 1pm until 6 pm for a donation of $6. Our own Mike Oliver is
Master this year and would appreciate your support.
Remember Unit Meeting on the third Monday of the month at 7 pm.
Pray for our troops, remember our Veterans, and be kind to each
other.

West Knox Shrine Club
Nobles, Ladies and Friends
For the past several months we have had numerous of our shrine club
members sick with this new virus. Some members developed pneumonia
and with long term care survived; while others did not. That was the
case with Luke (old pop) Dunagin. Luke was a long time member of
West Knox Shrine Club, and one of Luke’s specialty meals in March
was Corn Beef and Cabbage.
Luke’s family has requested a memorial service at the West Knox
Shrine Club and for those members and friends that made the regular
meeting saw the main meal was Corn Beef and Cabbage one of Luke’s
special treats. Instead of our regular meeting, this was a memorial
service to Luke, with those talking about Luke who knew him best.
This was not just merely a memorial service, but a celebration of
Luke’s life as man, Mason and Shriner and loyal member of West Knox
Shrine Club.
Our thoughts and prayers will be with Luke’s wife, Gail and his
immediate family. Luke you will be sadly missed by one and all.
Our next meeting will be in April with the poster child and company
visiting. Let’s all try to be at West Knox Shrine Club.
I need to enlist some of the West Knox Shrine ladies to help lady
Judy Cooper call members of the Shrine Club to remind them of the
meeting to get an accurate count of who will be attending in order
that lady Debbie can plan for the meal. Please check with lady Judy
if you can help in anyway with the call list.
West Knox Shrine Club would like to say Happy Birthday and
Anniversary those celebrating either for the month of April. The
stork has been busy the past few weeks! Congrats to Grandpa Gary Lee
and Grandma Sandy Lee – a boy!.
Here is the 2008 West Knox Shrine Club Menu: April - Ham / All The
Fixins; May - Burgers/Dogs/Fries; June - Steak/Baked Potatoes/Salad;
July - New York Style Chicken/Surprise; August - Pork
Chops/Beans/Potatoes; September - Beef Stew; October - October
Fest/Fried Potatoes; November - Thanksgiving/Christmas Celebration.
Let’s us all continue to remember those serving this great Nation in
our thoughts and prayers, and pray that this New Year 2008 will
bring about a change for the better.
May God bless everyone until me meet again.

Morristown Shrine Clowns
The Morristown Shrine Clowns would like to congratulate all elected
and appointed Divan, officers, and staff of Kerbela for the 2008
year.
Your clowns have started the year off with a couple of events
already, amidst sickness and crazy work schedules. One event that
took place was the “Read Across America” event sponsored by the
Hamblen County Educators Association. Who would have thought that
tying a few hundred balloons would cause so much bruising and
knuckle aches, and not to mention muscle spasms. Are we getting
older, or are we just out of practice? I like to think that it is
the latter. We are thankful for my Lady Ginger (aka Peanut), my
little Lady Amethyst, and her friend Alexis, who helped with the
balloon inflation, tying, and animal creations for this event.
Girls, we couldn’t have done it without your help. By the time this
makes it to your mailbox, the Annual Morristown Shrine Club Easter
Egg Hunt will have taken place, and we will be gearing up for Fun
Fest, Paper Sale, and Bible Schools. Thanks to all who helped at the
Egg Hunt, you always make it a success.
We are still seeking members for mirth and merriment. If you are
looking for a fun and exciting unit, give us a call or stop by one
of our meetings. Everyone is welcome to attend anytime.
Our meeting date was entered incorrectly in the pocket calendars.
The correct date is the second Thursday of each month at the
Morristown- Hamblen Library (Community Room) at 7:00 pm. Please make
a note on your calendars of this correction!
Our hearts are saddened at the loss of one of our own. Freddy helped
a lot of us get started as novice clowns, and I am honored to call
him friend and brother. His memory will live on. Jane, if you need
anything, please let us know.
Remember to pray for those who are less fortunate than us and for
those who are under the weather. Let’s also pray for our military
personnel, government leaders, first responders, and each other.
Always keep a smile on your face, a kind word in your heart, and a
penny in your purse.

Golden Ladies
Our ladies had a wonderful meeting at Kerbela Temple today,
March 5th. Bad weather has kept us from meeting this new year.
Chop House on Broadway in Fountain City is our April 2nd meeting
place. Be there at 11:00 am. We hope to plan a trip before too long.
Much love, sisters
